How we verify age.

Circus uses a global 16+ minimum, an 18+ gate for anything involving money, and the device-level controls Apple and Google already provide. Here's exactly how each piece works.

Account minimum 16+ Global. No exceptions for any country.
Monetization 18+ Paid content, payouts, Creator Fund.
App Store 17+ Apple rating · Screen Time enforced.
Google Play Mature 17+ IARC rating · MA15+ in Australia.
01

Platform age minimums

Circus has two age thresholds that apply globally:

  • 16 years — minimum age to create a Circus account and use the general platform.
  • 18 years — minimum age to access monetization features, including Creator Fund earnings and publishing paid content.

These thresholds apply regardless of the laws in a user's home country. Where local law sets a higher age minimum, the higher threshold applies. Circus does not provide a lower threshold for any jurisdiction.

During registration, users are required to confirm their date of birth. Accounts that register with a date of birth below the minimum age are not created. Accounts where the stated date of birth falls below 18 are blocked from accessing monetization features even if the account is otherwise active.

02

App Store age ratings (Apple)

Circus is rated 17+ in the App Store. This reflects the user-generated nature of the platform — while Circus actively moderates content, users may encounter language, topics, and creator-generated material that is intended for mature audiences. The 17+ rating does not override Circus's own 16-year account minimum; it is set conservatively to reflect the platform's content category accurately to Apple's review team.

Parental controls on iOS (Screen Time) allow parents and guardians to restrict access to apps rated 17+ on their child's device. See the Parents & Guardians guide for setup instructions.

03

Google Play content ratings

Circus is rated Mature 17+ on Google Play (equivalent to MA15+ in Australia and similar classifications elsewhere). Parental controls in Google Play allow parents and guardians to restrict downloads by content rating using a PIN.

04

Platform-level parental controls

Both iOS and Android provide device-level tools that parents and guardians can use to manage their child's access to apps and content, independently of Circus's own controls.

  • iPhone & iPad (Screen Time): Set content and privacy restrictions, restrict app downloads by age rating, require approval for downloads, and set daily time limits. Lockable with a separate passcode. Settings → Screen Time.
  • Android (Google Family Link): Approve app downloads, view installed apps, set daily screen time limits, and lock a child's device remotely. Configured through the Family Link app from Google Play.

These platform controls operate independently of Circus — a child who cannot download an app rated 17+ due to Screen Time restrictions will not be able to install Circus at all, regardless of what they enter during registration.

05

If underage use is detected

If Circus becomes aware that an account has been created by a user below the minimum age — whether through a report, a support request, or internal detection — the account is suspended pending review.

Where a suspended account is confirmed to belong to someone under 16, the account is permanently closed and any associated data is deleted in accordance with our Privacy Policy and applicable data protection law. We do not retain personal data for accounts closed on age grounds beyond what is required by law.

Where an account was created with a false date of birth, the account holder is solely responsible for the misrepresentation. Circus is not liable for any content posted, monetization activity, or third-party agreements entered into through an account created in violation of the age minimum.

06
