Age requirements

Circus has two age thresholds that apply globally:

  • 16 years — minimum age to create a Circus account and use the general platform. In some countries, local law sets a higher minimum — where it does, the higher threshold applies.
  • 18 years — minimum age for creator monetization features, including the Circus Creator Fund, paid content, and payouts.

During registration, users are required to confirm their date of birth. Accounts registered with a date of birth below the minimum are not created. Accounts where the stated age is below 18 are blocked from accessing monetization features regardless of account age.

Circus is planned to be rated 17+ on the App Store and Mature 17+ on Google Play at launch. These ratings allow parents and guardians to block installation via Screen Time (iOS) and Family Link (Android) before a child ever reaches the signup screen. See Age Verification → for the full breakdown.

How we keep Circus safe

Content on Circus will pass through automated scanning and human review processes we are building for launch — not only in response to reports, but proactively where possible.

  • Hash-matching filters known prohibited content (CSAM, spam, known-bad URLs) before it ever reaches a feed.
  • ML text and image classifiers flag borderline content for human review in real time.
  • AWS Comprehend and AWS Rekognition run secondary checks on text and image content at scale.
  • Human safety team reviews flagged content and handles escalations on a 24-hour basis.

Under-18 accounts receive stricter default settings — limited direct messaging, tighter content filters, and reduced data collection — automatically applied at signup based on declared date of birth.

What you can do

  • Have the conversation. The most effective safety tool is an open conversation. Ask your teen which creators they follow, what they post, and whether they've encountered anything that made them uncomfortable. Our Safety Resources page includes guides for these conversations.
  • Understand the platform. Read our Content Guidelines and Community Guidelines to understand what's permitted. Knowing the rules helps you recognize when something is being broken.
  • Report concerns directly. Use the in-app report button on any post or profile. For urgent concerns involving a minor, email safety@circus.app with "CHILD SAFETY" in the subject — these are routed immediately to senior safety staff.
  • Know your crisis resources. If your child is in immediate danger, contact your local emergency services first. See section 07 for specialist support lines across Australia, the UK, and the United States.

Parental controls

Both iOS and Android provide device-level tools that parents and guardians can use to manage their child's access to apps and content, independently of Circus's own controls.

  • iPhone & iPad (Screen Time): Set content and privacy restrictions, restrict app downloads by age rating (Circus is rated 17+), require approval for downloads, and set daily time limits. Lockable with a separate passcode. Settings → Screen Time.
  • Android (Google Family Link): Approve app downloads, view installed apps, set daily screen time limits, and lock a child's device remotely. Circus is rated Mature 17+ on Google Play. Configured through the Family Link app.

These platform controls operate independently of Circus. A child blocked from downloading apps rated 17+ by Screen Time or Family Link will not be able to install Circus at all, regardless of what they enter during registration.

Frequently asked questions

What age is Circus suitable for?

Circus requires users to be at least 16 in most countries (18 in some regions). We apply additional protections for users under 18 — including more restrictive default privacy settings, limits on who can contact them directly, and stricter content moderation. We do not permit underage accounts and use Apple's App Store Declared Age Capability to enforce this at signup.

How does Circus verify users' ages?

During signup, we use a combination of date-of-birth declaration and behavioral signals to assess age. Where we have reason to believe an account holder is younger than declared, we can request additional verification. Accounts that fail age verification are suspended pending review. We are actively working on more robust age assurance in line with UK Online Safety Act requirements.

I think someone is targeting my child. What do I do?

If you believe your child is being groomed, harassed, or targeted for exploitation, contact your local police immediately. Then report the account to us at safety@circus.app with as much detail as possible — we will prioritize the review and cooperate fully with law enforcement. Do not delete any evidence before contacting the police. See our Law Enforcement page for our cooperation process.

What should I do if my child is in immediate danger?

Call your local emergency services immediately. Australia: 000. United Kingdom: 999. United States: 911. Do not wait to contact us first — emergency services take priority. After you've contacted police, email safety@circus.app so we can preserve evidence and assist the investigation.

06

Make a formal request

To submit a formal request regarding a minor's account — including account removal, data deletion, or a safety escalation — email parents@circus.app. Include the account email address, your relationship to the minor, and a description of the concern. Our safety team reviews all requests within 2 business days.

For urgent child safety concerns, email safety@circus.app with "CHILD SAFETY" in the subject — these are routed immediately to senior safety staff.
